Newfoundland isn't in the Maritimes, the Maritimes were already an established thing 300+ years before Newfoundland joined Canada.
That said, they likely reached Nova Scotia and New Brunswick too, maybe even Maine.

There is some fascinating stuff about it in the sagas. We know that they lost a fight with Inuits and believed it was magic weapons aided by flying orbs. Overall they were just less aware and trusting of the aboriginals. The French, Portuguese, and English had more knowledge (and technology) to help them pacify the natives. The situation between tribes and peoples on the continent was more stable by the time French/Anglos/Portuguese arrived too.

There's also the part of just how many people you bring, and how much of that is capable of fighting.
