Random factoid: The most elite unit of the Byzantine army was the Varangian Guard. They were a mercenary battalion originally staffed mainly by Vikings, then for several centuries by the English nobility and their descendents displaced by the Norman conquest. So, Byzantine Emporers did not trust local troops and were guarded by North European warriors for around 400 years.
