We have a fuck ton of Irish descendants because when they came it was a shithole, the same for the scandinavians and southern Italians. We actually were a massive shithole when the mass emigration to Murrica happened during 18th/19th centuries. Barely any wars in that period to reduce population (which happened a lot in previous eras), mineral fertilisation was just about to be invented here (out of pressure - there's a reason von Liebig and Haber-Bosch happened here), land was split up equally between sons (a tradition dating back to Frankish times which also #rekt our relations to the frogs for 1100 years), then a really bad cold wave around 1816 which destroyed crops, finally the fact we were clusterfucked into tiny duchies which delayed industrialisation for decades compared to England
