We already do that as a member of the EU trading bloc. Just last year we just secured one of the most valuable trade deals ever with Japan. Trade with the wider world is far more possible and lucrative as part of the EU than it would be outside of it.

Plenty of people are abandoning nationalism in favour of economic prosperity and multiculturalism. Knocking down borders between places furthers this goal, and it isn't exactly crazy to think a majority of people may think along such lines in fifty years from now. Borders are being torn down with each passing decade, people are migrating more and more to the detriment of national culture and identity. Those who don't strongly value a national identity aren't really going to care where they are governed from, provided everything is nice and efficient.
