I'm a dentist. Wages are better than any other graduate except top tier maths/econ schools. But there is stress, risk of litigation, student debt and fees to balance that out. Political Science, Journalism, or International Relations is probably the best because it's easier to do consulting, news, teaching, and think-tank shit after you retire. It also opens the door to law or business school.

Nursing's pretty good, and given that there's a huge shortage of nurses hospitals will pay you the big bucks to come work for them (avoid med surg recovery floors though they're shit tier, do a specialty if you can)

I have a communications degree (Television/Radio/Film). I went to a private university (40k-50k per year when I was there in 2001-2005). I work in television, mostly freelance. I make 150k-200k per year, depending on the projects.

However, other than having a good 'name' for my university, it did not help me any better other than connections in the industry.

Had I been paying for my own college, going to a public or in-state university would have been cheaper and I would have gotten the same education.

Community college would not work, even though you'd be learning the same material. The appeal of having a 'big university' opened doors.

If there are any aspiring doctors in this thread, do what you love but keep in mind that,as a general rule, the less specialized you are the more your residency is going to suck mostly because of simple patient volume. Surgical residency sucked for a different set of reasons but all in all I'd say I had it better than the GP and ped schmucks.
I also highly recommend going .mil with the HPSP, get paid to go through med school and get the full GI bill when you fulfill your contract, signing bonuses are also available.
