The case of China vs India is interesting. China has a communist government that lets markets exist but ultimately controls everything including the biggest companies. India is capitalist and democratic. If capitalism is better than communism, India should be able to surpass China (they are the only ones who have enough population to do that). However, China has been more successful so far

India was under the "license raj" until the 90s. It was more of a planned economy than China in the 80s, when Dengism (market reformism and opening up to the global economy) took over.
