I might return to do a Master's degree, but regardless I think it's a useful language to speak, especially in Eastern Europe. German would probably make more sense to learn, but I hate it so much that I can't be bothered.

See above, but not only that. With the amount of Russian I know now, I can already understand much more of other slavic languages, which is basically all our neighbors. I had a Polish and a Bulgarian flatmate there, there were multiple cases where I could more or less understand what they were talking about, written and spoken as well.

His pronounciation is almost perfect, not even sure if I'd notice the accent if I didn't know he was Slovakian. He made some very small mistakes tho, so that would give it away, but Hungarian is super hard, so I'd be more surprised if he didn't.

We don't really care anymore. Most people who actually experienced it are dead, and the rest of are kinda used to learning about crushed rebellions by the time we get there in our history lessons.

Depends on what you mean by similar. The structure of the language actually is, but the words aren't really because these languages split such a long time ago. Some super simple words that you'd expect some hunting-fishing nomads to use have the same origins and patterns of changes but even those ones aren't that similar. Some examples, so you can see: hand-kéz-käsi, blood-vér-veri, stone-kő-kivi, fish-hal-kala, water-víz-vesi
So it's not like I could understand Finnish, we have way more loanwords from Turkic and even more from Slavic languages.
