Yes the English colonies spoke German as a first language. The meme about America being majority Germanic is because Germans populated areas with low people, so on a map it looks like America was 60% German. While the cities and the mass of the population were majority English. New France was the only noticeable non English colony in north America. All the others were tiny trading colonies that had such little influence once the masses of Brits and Irish flooded in.

This is a myth that gets commonly repeated, but there was never a vote concerning national languages. It's always been English. The German diaspora in the US were too insular to bother trying to replace English with German.

The fact that the scale of the British Empire and the power of the US would grant English its dominant status was unforeseeable at the time, that's what I call luck.

Tell me when did you ever read that the reason behind the Roman Empire, the French one or or something else was to spread their language ? It was for political or economical reason, the vanquished people simply adopted the victor's language as a consequence. Give credits where its due, to give it where it's unnecessary.

You think English is hard because your language is entirely different than most western languages but I guarantee you'd have just as many or even more problems with learning french or spanish. German might work a bit better, I don't know.
Every foreigner I've spoken to about this subject has said that the lingua franca might as well be english because even though it's retarded in terms of both phonetics and vocabulary it's extremely accessible to almost everybody in the world and using other languages would require unnecessary effort
My point is why fix something that isn't broken?
