Look, there are a lot of populations that settled here with religeous backgrounds. We started with a lot of protestants, and when the Germans and Irish started settling here in large groups we had a large infusion of Catholics, too. You can see a lot of religeous influence in and on the country, especially in its early days. But you need to understand that we're not a religeous nation, we're a nation full of religeous peoples, and there's a huge difference. The only civilized way to run a country full of protestants and catholics and muslims and mormons and every other denomination under the sun all in one place is as a secular nation, and the founding fathers understood that. No church can be allowed to have control or overwhelming influence because it would mean the suppression, directly or indirectly, of the voices of the other denominations. It was more important to the founding fathers that everyone be free to have their own opinion on the matter.

We did, and do, have a large Christian population, though.
