St Paul is also significant because of the road to damascus, his "self revelation" is not dissimliar to the experience of gnosis. In summary Gnosticism is different from the abrahamics as 1. it rejects the old testament and 2. it rejects the "meaning" of jesus/what jesus is.

what basically happened is that Hellenistic thought had exerted serious intellectual pressure on the Jews for a while when Christiany happened and fused together some of the major elements of Judaism and Greek (especially Platonic) philosophy. back then "christians" did not consider themselves christians in the modern sense of the word, they saw themselves as Jews that had revolutionized Judaism (hence why historians usually refer to "christians" in this era as Judeo-Christians"). so that happened and everyone in the region slapped their forehead in awe and said "holy shit you can DO THAT?" and then throughout the next centuries or so a great number of Jewish-Christian sects popped up everywhere which all considered themselves distinct from each other. put differently, christianity was, in its beginning, only one of these sects. it just so happens that it was also the one that had the most success.

almost 2000 years later modern philologist start looking into this matter and recognize this trend that I have just described. because thats what it is, a historical trend, not a religion. they decided to summarize them under the label of "Gnosticism" a word that none of the "Gnostics" would have ever used to describe themselves.
