thats because the basis of Christianity isnt the Trinity, its the new testament, I'd say. of course you could argue that you cant be a real christian without believing in trinity, just as someone from the middle ages would have claimed that you cant be a Christian without accepting the authority of the pope. the semantic morphology of terms like "Christianity" reveal over time which aspect of dogma are really fundamental for them. wether a religion can survive a schism such as protestantism depends on whether or not there is emerges a new consensus to fall back on.

well if thats true it would change my opinion. but i cant verify it right now, I'd have to check. still, my suspicion is that Gnosticism is too general a term to be restricted only to thosecreeds that accept this canons. maybe in a different timeline one gnostic tradition managed to reach some kind of supremacy over the others, incorporated them, worked out a binding canon and survived long enough to establish authoritative structures. but its not this one.

thats not enough to make up a religion. you cant be a psychanalysist either without believing in the subconscious. that doesnt make psychoanalysis a religion. only if you considered Freud as infallible and his writing to be an absolute truth would it be one. religion has to be tied to a fixed point in the physical world. that fixed point is what an entire religion hinges on. You cannot be a Christian and disagree with Jesus, a real person. You cannot be a Jew and not believe in the Tora. Thats just logically not possible.

I don't really want to go down the route of the one true christian i'm just trying to demonstrate that even ideas that one would think, within mainstream discourse at least, such as the trinity rejected and has a controversial history within the belief system. it is interesting that there are people who consider themselves christian but think that christ is 100% human and has not a single aspect of divinity in him, not even a drop of vinegar in the ocean.
There are certain texts that have either been considered examples of, potentially, gnostic heresy or have been continually cited by gnostic leaders. The Nag Hammadi Library was only unearthed in 1945 and here was a collection of gnostic and christian texts which were far more, by number, than any other gnostic find. I do not think it is unfair to say that the ambiguities you state wrt canonical texts within the gnostic tradition are the result of suppresion of texts and thought by the (mostly) christian hegemony.

Sure an idea in of itself is not enough to be a religion but i'm saying that you don't seem to think there is any/much simliarity in thought between gnostic figures when I am saying actually it's the opposite and there are central ideas that run through them.
If you want to get right into the "scriptures" so to speak then definitely the Nag Hammadi library gnosis.org/naghamm/nhl.html. A decent introduction text is Gnosticism: New Light on the Ancient Tradition of Inner Knowing by Stephan A. Hoeller. It has a few weird things going on, at one point he seems to argue that environmentalism is a bad thing but whatever. It's nevertheless a good introductory text although it also conflates mani into the gnostic tradition which I am more sceptical of. Manichean/Mandaeanism are two persian "gnostic" movements where I agree withy our criticism that we might be using gnostic as too broad a label for non heterodox thought - out of characters now anyway.
