When I was a kid me and my friend were into finding stray cats home. Once we found a gray little kitten, we were so lucky that literally the first person we asked agreed to be the cat's owner. He looked 20~ yo, seemed to be in a hurry. He asked his mother about it, she gave her permission. He thanked us and gave a hundred rubles. We bought
some skittles. I still know where he lives, but never visited him again.

I've heard that western europeans were afraid of inquisition back then in medieval times, and because cats were attribute of witches, people prefer dogs. There weren't such things in Eastern Europe so maybe in comparison with the West we have more cats per capita, but I really doubt it tbqh.

doubt it, it's more about the attitude of people, on average certain types of people prefer dogs or cats
