dropped fedora, you little dawkins kid. :^)
How much dosh can you make with your biblical knowledge?
Meanwhile rare skills such as knowing Papuan langauges can potentially lend you a well paid (private) or very secure(academia) job!
Haha, le epic hatposting, I totally believe in magical skydaddies now.
>watching a video about old Vedic chants
>dad approaches
>"Stop listening to those arabic demonic songs or I will break the computer"
t. goy
sorry but it's less funnier than your epic retarded posting or
My dad is a chemical engineer and he's very "square minded" he only believes in learning "useful knowledge" only. I'm a Biologist and I love science, but I also like learning about world cultures, there's nothing wrong about learning about the last coup in Zimbabwe, the refugee crisis in Myanmar or the earthquake in Indonesia, right?
look at those golden ratio, i dare you to find a culture with more profound application of the math concept
>not reading a book that tracks the story, laws, philosophy, poetry and happenings of a group of people that would on to influence the two other biggest religions of the world
>book that would eventually be used to create an actual religious state
>would be used to crown kings
>to take oaths
>to wage crusades and inquisitions
>a book that for some reason keeps on influencing societies literally thousands of years later
Your dad is clearly an enlightened /lit/ connoisseur, go read about meme languages from meme civilizations and tell your dad he should come here and post with us
Imagine being a tribal and still having the same dad bod as some soyboy from the city
God I fucking hate that shit.
>user what do you do in your spare time?
>I learn X
>Hahaha that's so useless who will even hire you?/Wow that's awesome, Goldberg Ltd. is looking for specialists!
What happened to doing things just because you enjoy it?
I loved Dawkins book "The Selfish Gene", but the chapter "Memes" is absolutely terrible and pseudo-scientific.
What makes the languages of Papua New Guinea so special?
>refuses to read the single most influential book in western cultural history
>believes he's hit a goldmine off of fucking Papuan languages of all things
>calls other ignorant
Ok.
What do Indonesians think about Papua New Guinea? And why do they look so different to Indonesians, even though you're next to each other and even share an island?
Dang, that's pretty damn American.
Though with how culturally important the bible is, it's also a good read.
I've read the Bible all my fucking life, I want to learn something new!
>something useful
>bible
why do thirdies always have such useless hobbies? reading useless shit is firstie thing because firstie societies are already complete.
Hey, that's no way to talk to your dad. :|
it is a kind of act of trying to escape from criticism of your own culture. you will get poor learning regardless of its practical purpose. look around the sources that make up you first. it is not enough to "simply" read the bible. the search for other cultures comes next.
also made a good point. everything in the world is westernized. even pure researches into other cultures are.
Just by living in a western society you learn enough of the Bible to see what makes it work. Everything beyond that is shit that even the rabid religious freaks don't actually know (especially the Old Testament) - they just spout the same slogans as everyone else with more dedication.
Not that I'm denying the importance of the bible, but you really can go straight to getting a basic understanding of Confucius before you delve deeper into the Bible.
>Just by living in a western society you learn enough of the Bible to see what makes it work.
sure, but passive acceptance and critical understanding are very different.
>Everything beyond that is shit
disagreed. the mythology is always open to interpretation even these days.
>the rabid religious freaks don't actually know (especially the Old Testament) - they just spout the same slogans as everyone else with more dedication.
I didn't mean you should become autistic mania who believe fiction. exactly the opposite.
>you really can go straight to getting a basic understanding of Confucius before you delve deeper into the Bible.
possibly yes, because I live in korea. but you're in western society. right?
>sure, but passive acceptance and critical understanding are very different.
Absolutely. I believe everyone here should at least read the New Testament on his own at some point. But it's not necessarily the first priority, you already start with a lot of basic knowledge.
>...
You've unnecessarily split the sentence in two. I mean "shit" as in "things", not "shit" as is in "garbage". My point is that the Old Testament isn't really as important culturally as you'd expect. It's sort of like an unwanted child, it's there, and it's yours, but everyone in the Christian world would rather stress how Jesus claimed he had fulfilled the Law already than bother making it work with the modern world morality.
>possibly yes, because I live in korea. but you're in western society. right?
That's why I'd advocate reaching out to other cultures first even more. Entrenching yourself deeper into your own culture's way of thinking can risk blinding yourself to all the other value systems out there. Religious texts are written to be persuasive after all. I think learning a tidbit of everything, and then slowly delving deeper into all religions at an even pace is the best approach.
the dadbod is the pinnacle of human masculinity
