What platform and language are you programming in?

I'm just thinking about learning programming so I was checking out some books

Then I'd say go for python, master it. Then work on data structures and algorithms. Last step is C and computer architecture.
At this point you'll be comfortable with literally anything teach related except web dev.

I did read that Python is the best language to start with, though I found out about the cs50 MIT course and it's apparently really good for beginners, but also really hard

Learn it from code academy for the syntax and basic concepts. Then look up "Automate the boring stuff" and start writing useful stuff you actually use. You'll git gud in no time.

don't start with books, start with the documentation for the programming languages you're interested in as it's usually as good as books because they want you to learn their language
if you have to get a book maybe try a well reviewed one for the language you picked but you should probably instead get a more general book like 'structure and interpretation of computer programs' or 'how to design programs' - the latter is free at htdp.org and either way both are from MIT

Do you want to learn a programming language to get a work? Don’t even bother, starting from scratch with no guidance is rather difficult and takes many months, you’ll give up at the first major hurdle. Your best bet would be to sign up for some boot camp, but most of those are scam and don’t teach you anything.
