Carpatian Ruthenia. Rusyn (Ukrainian government claims they are just Ukrainians speaking a dialect but they’re distinct East Slavic ethnicity) and Hungarian minorities live there. Population is sceptical of centralist Kiev government. They don’t belong to the Ukrainian nationalist government. It’s full of woods and pretty underdeveloped. Czech and Slovak tourists like it there. Biggest city is Uzhorod, no notable natural resources.
Its history in the 20th century has been tumultuous. Until the end of WWI it belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary. Czechoslovakia gained the territory in the Treaty of Trianon. When Nazi Germany invaded Czechoslovakia, local government tried to proclaim independence but it was occupied by Horthy’s Hungary. Stalin annexed it to the USSR and after the dissolution of the union it went to Ukraine.
