In small towns/villages church is very important, has influence to the people. I mean eastern part of Poland especially. Most of old people are very religious, go to the church every sunday, some of them even everyday. So when priest tell something during homily people will treat it very serious. Young people do not care much about religion. From one year to another people less often going to church.

That depends, I think it's possible, but as always, depends of the priest which you have in your town. Personally I do not meet with this kind of behaviour.

I haven't read a lot on it. Rebels By Peter De Rosa is a pretty comprehensive book on all things surrounding the 1916 rising. Doesn't read like a history book, its very engaging. Provos the IRA and Sinn Fein by Peter Taylor is a very good book on the troubles.
Seán Duffy, Ireland in the Middle Ages is a good intro book for this period
I've also read Celtic mythology by MacCulloch but its no use to someone who doesn't already have a working knowledge of Irish folklore.
