Americano is a standard coffee which you can drink plain or add milk/sugar to it if you please.
I find it bitter personally and prefer a latte which includes steamed milk or a mocha which is chocolaty.
My top public anxiety tip would be to acquire a coffee machine like a nespresso, dolce gusto or tassimo and try out the different flavours at home if you want to avoid ordering things you find you intensely dislike after one sip and embarrassing yourself in front of friends and co-workers.

It's the bitterness of coffee that I struggle with, so would a Latte be better to start with?

A lot of things are acquired tastes which take some time to adjust to. Learning to like coffee would broaden horizons and open up a lot of different hot drink options instead of just tea.

I got a Tassimo for my Mam for Christmas, and whilst it was €60, I seen it for €35 in DID Electrical.
I don't think it's worth it since I never drank coffee before getting it and after I only had the Americano which is essentially a colder instant coffee because it doesn't boil the water, and instant coffee is infinitely better value
I'd only recommend it if you wanted different coffees like a cappuccino or Colombiano or whatever since you can buy tabs for them but they're quite expensive for what you get, even if the big shops rotate special offers and discounts on them
