Just use old fashion textbooks/grammar books, you have to go through the whole grammar of a language to learn it. Stuff like duolingo only works for learning general communication stuff, not the whole language.
>be born outside of the US
>be bi/trilingual by default
>be quadlingual if your parents come from different countries
What language(s) are you interested in OP?
French, I'm fairly novice at the moment.
this. you'll cowards have it easy compared to us english-native brainlets
You study the language, but apparently that concept is too difficult for the anglophone to comprehend
>tfw quadrilingual
read a shit ton in the language you want to learn. find stuff to read that interests you and just accumulate as much material as you can.
Just doing everything I do in English. If I interested about something
>googled it in English
Movies/Tv series/Youtube/Twitch/Games/even language on the phone
>English
Sitting here and on reddit.
Aside that, reading all stuffs kind of articles. Duolingo (web version is better) + Anki Web (android app) and download language deck in which you are interested in. Also buy textbooks/grammar books I prefer pdf then you can read it on your phone anytime.
It's really important to surround yourself an 'x' language which you want to learn. Note my English is still fucked, but I'm just to lazy to learn how to properly using grammar.
Vulgar Arabic doesn’t count
how did you get to a point where everything you read didn't seem meaningless to you and you felt confident enough to write things out in English and expect it to be understood? I'm such a pussy when it comes to communicating in a foreign language.
>>be born outside of the US
he's just saying we're not smart enough
Several years or semesters of classes and then immersion
Duolingo is good for a very basic interest but it’s gimmicky, the only program I found useful was Pimsleur as it really helps you nail down pronunciation and useful phrases
Brits miss a lot of opportunities with your proximity to the continent
A bit embarrassing you’re so monolingual
>inb4 Mexico and Spanish
Learning my 5th language, Russian. And improving my German language
Use duolingo or memrise everyday for 5-10 minutes to learn vocabulary and get exposed to the sound of the language.
Use interpals.net to find a native in the language you want to learn. Find somebody you get along with and exchange whatsapp. Practice speaking with them and send voice clips / call each other. A lot of people on this site want to learn English so you have something to offer them in return.
What language do you want to learn OP?
mexico and spanish
A lot of practice and exposure to the language
I’m doing Duolingo+a beginner’s class in college for spanish right now. Already speak french and english because i’m from quebec
How similar is Spanish to French based on your experience?
Arabic
English
French
Italian
Currently learning German and then Spanish
I really want to become fluent in French. I've been learning it for a while but I don't get it yet
Flying to Mexico is about the same distance and cost for me to fly to France
It’s also an ugly language spoken by ugly people
Look at
dimmi dove abiti che vengo a prenderti a ciabattate in faccia
>Flying to Mexico is about the same distance and cost for me to fly to France
wait so what’s the difference between our monolingualism and your monolingualism?
Why French? Start fresh
This sounds good cause you might even make friends but I've heard interpals has gone to shit. Now the language I want to learn isn't one, it's a lot and I don't know with which I should start(I'm leaning towards Spanish)
You’re only a few hours and a relatively cheap train or bus ride away from France or any number of European countries
I am not close to Mexico not am I close to france
Meh. There are simililarites but not as many as i had thought before. For example gendered nouns exist in both but a lot of the genders are switched between the two languages. I still think knowing french makes it somewhat easier to learn spanish
What language would you recommend I start fresh with?
Alright good to know in case I decide to ever learn French
>not learning Finnish
Io vivo nella casa di Sua mamma, venga noi stiamo aspettandolo.
>It’s also an ugly language spoken by ugly people
BASED
duolingo is a scam
use memrise or something else
>why should you continue doing the thing you like and want to do just start fresh bro lol
god i fucking hate americans
Why?
ouvrez la bouche svp
I have been learning English since I was 5yo (I'm 21 now), but you know in school I think 5-16years I do not care at all about language, aside 2hours/week at school I did nothing with English. I think since 16 (maybe a bit before) I started to watching Simpsons and Southpark with Polish subtitles, and reading English Internet, but using google translate.
Since 18 I started learning programming so I was forced to use English all the time. In the same time I started reading 4channel, watching Tv series with English subtitles, reading articles/researches about mental health (lack of quality articles about this in Polish btw.) Also I was always interested about geography, how does look life in x country, so it was (and still is) really interested to reading for the example shitposting on generals like for the example /cum/ and it really enjoyed me that I could read messages from people around the world in their language.
When I was 19 I started to learning Swedish when I'm using Duolingo+Anki I want to note that I'm learning English->Swedish, not Polish->Swedish, so it probably has an impact on my English as well.
I think after 1 or 2 years reading Jow Forums I started to posting but I always checked my senteces on google translate.
Now I understand almost everything you're writing here without google translate. I rate my English on B2 (without grammar), my grammar is ~A2/A1 I think.

Learned Spanish in school.
Self taught Russian and French.
I learn from music, watching TV shows, dictionaries, phrase books.
I don't usually care for language learning programs.
I liked Byki when it was free. Now it is all pay. Flashcard program with some flashcard collections having audio.
Also text chatting in games and on this board.
Have been learning Russian and French for the past 10 years.
Haven't pushed myself as much as I should.
Russian has been easier.
French may be in text similar to English but the pronunciation is very different which is a big barrier.
I have been to Quebec and my ability to learn French has been much better since then.
>SPA - FR = 41
>SPA - ITA = 41
bullshit
If you consider Norwegian and Danish to be different languages than Swedish.
Anglos could learn Welsh.
anki is remarkably flexible, people use it mostly for vocab but you can use it for grammar, example sentences, reminders to practice, etc. i have a vocab deck, with example sentences, 10 words a day which i never miss. I also put an entire grammar book(Bescherelle) in it, and i do 2-4 rules a day depending on how busy school is. I have a common sentences deck, which i just dump stuff i read on /fr/ or articles with commonly used idioms/phrases i see online. finally i use it for challenges, i have a to do list anki deck which i do everyday. i use it for piano, french and some other stuff. just have a card that says "read 10 minutes of news in french" or something like that.
the most important thing is consistency, you have to do something for learning every day; the specific method doesn't really matter. anki is pretty good for that but you also have to put in the legwork to make it work
I tried Duolingo with French and me already knowing a great deal of French, it wastes time with way too basic stuff.
Won't let you skip ahead.
Knowing Spanish and French, certain forms of Italian sound like Spanish spoken with a funny dialect to me.
Just chat with natives, hellotalk is a good app for that
sounds good but what if you are shy or scared of talking to people?
I'm pretty shy but when I'm chatting I just don't care, it's not like real life where fucking up might lead to countless other awkward situations, the worst that could happen is you get ignored or the other person blocks you if you're too weird. But just move on to the next profile, you will eventually someone you click with and can potentially have a nice language exchange friendship with
Probably generalising but the language teaching and learning here is just shit. I live in london and out of the five teachers I had for french in high school only one was native (and half italian) the rest were brits who had lived in france/knew the language. They didn't care if we learned or not as long as we passed our exams and stuff, I mean they're literally next to us how hard is it to find a motivated frog to teach french
mind you students weren't bothered either about actually learning we just wanted to pass exams but my french after 6+ years is still pathetic
it's the same here and I can't really blame any English speakers, we have almost zero need to learn another language except for cultural interest reasons as compared to anywhere else
what language and what kind of things do you do in a typical chat?
Both of my Spanish teachers were annoying women.
The second one though cared about me putting effort into learning and that teacher had a small class with there being only 3 other students.
There's no point in learning a language that you aren't going to use daily. Just stick with English. Or learn a more relevant language like Spanish.
There are sizeable Spanish speaking communities where I'm at.
French is useful because of proximity to Quebec.
Tourists from Quebec travel through my state and the truckers deliver to terminals in this area.
you won't need to learn any language then, problem solved.
English and portuguese, I've also on and off started learning french and japanese.
My typical chats revolve around trying to know each other, so I hopefully make some friends at the same time I learn a language. Think of it as any regular conversation you would have with anyone else, be it an irl friend or some random user in Jow Forums, the only differences being that you might be switching languages and correcting each other om time to time, and you will be learning about other cultures too.
interesting, thanks
What culture do you like? Where do you like going on vacation? Where do you want a qt from?
