I think that non-medical religious-motivated genital mutilation on minors should be outlawed. It's an abhorrent crime that infringes on the constitutional rights to bodily integrity, religious freedom and self-determination of one of societies weakest members and should be persecuted without any false mercy of the justice system.

Aesthetics is one of the bullshit justifications given. The other common ones are hygiene, social conformity, and disease prevention. It's quite common - probably 80% of the dicks I've seen have been cut. The procedure is usually done in infancy.

It's just the norm. I doubt any parents even think about the reasoning.

I've read that it's very rare in Latin America except among Jews and Muslims, and there aren't many of them except some in Argentina, Chile, and the big cities in Brazil.

The parents usually just think that it's the best thing for their child. Since most men here are cut and thus don't know what having a foreskin is like, there's a lot of misinformation that gets passed around, so a lot of people think that the foreskin is just a flap of extra skin that makes guys have dick cheese and increases risk of HIV and cancer. They cite studies of questionable quality as "proof" and don't really consider the fact that the boy could grow up to hate being circumcised, or the fact that there wouldn't even be a debate if someone said they'd circumcise their baby girl (female genital mutilation is a federal crime). Nobody really thinks to look at HIV rates in Europe (where very few men are cut) or investigate why there's a supposed link between foreskin and disease or dirtiness.
The practice started in the Victorian era and became more widespread in the early 1900s. People thought it would prevent masturbation, since they thought masturbation caused all sorts of terrible issues. Circumcision rates were highest around 1950s-1980s, and are about 50% for newborns now. It's a lot less common among Hispanics and in states that don't cover the procedure under insurance.

Barely anybody knows anything about the normal male genital anatomy, not even doctors whose first course of action when a guy with his foreskin intact has a problem is almost always circumcision because they have literally not been taught anything else about the foreskin other than how to cut it off. Not to mention nearly every single person I have ever seen in this country talk about refusing to circumcise their boy said they were asked several times whether or not they wanted to do it by hospital staff, sometimes being outright shamed by nurses and doctors for not doing it. Very few doctors ever talk about the functions of the foreskin because they simply don't know them, but they're always eager to tell people how much "cleaner" it is and how it "reduces the risk" of STDs, UTIs, HIV, etc.

The average man has been deprived of a foreskin for multiple generations now and very few people actually know what it is like to have one or to experience sex with an intact man. As a culture we have effectively had an entire body part erased from existence, and in its place are lies, distortions, and old wive's tales. Ask the average American on the street and they'll probably tell you that the foreskin is a ticking time bomb, that it's ugly, that they're "glad" they were circumcised and that they function "just fine". Ask them how large the average foreskin is, and they won't have a fucking clue.
