If you take all temperatures on Earth and average them out, then you'd notice that the average is rising. CO2 is a good heat insulator and keeps heat from escaping back into space. The more insulation we have, the hotter earth will become. Now this doesn't mean that the CO2 out of our cars is going to make the earth 10 degrees hotter, but it does warm up the earth enough to warm up the oceans and melt permafrost. The oceans and permafrost contain 1000x more CO2 than what our cars and factories have released, and it will dissolve out of the oceans and be released into the atmosphere as they warm up. Methane is another insulator that is wayyy better at retaining heat than Carbon Dioxide and there's billions of tons of the stuff trapped under Siberian and Canadian permafrost. You could see how a slight change could create a domino effect that's irreversible and fucks our shit up.

I live in Minnesota and until this week is was one of the warmest winters we hit 50 degrees in January. The only reason it is gold now is because the jet stream is so fucked it threw air from the north pole into mainland USA.

Climate studies don't focus on "warm weather" but on CO2 levels in permafrost and weather patterns. ALL climate models, with different inputs and methodologies, point to an anomalous global warming that started in the industrial revolution and is getting worse in time, and it's much more accelerated and exaggerated than other warm periods (as climate is cyclic and there are warm and cold periods) like in the Middle ages.

If global warming fucks up the gulf stream, which it can because convection is a thing, the north of Europe will get colder. There's more to climate change than simply "hurr durr it's a bit warmer in summer so what". And it's already happening, and it's probably too late to stop it. Desertification is pushing Sahelian tribes against each other, resulting in wars (Mali, CAR, Nigeria, South Sudan etc). Deforestation is making natural disasters more frequent and violent. A drought in Syria led to a civil war that hasn't ended. Floods in southeast Asia are killing more people than ever before. Only a few countries like Canada, Sweden, Denmark or Russia may profit from climate change (new trade routes, cheaper resource extraction, expansion of liveable land and so on) but most of humanity is going to the gutter.

It doesn't make it colder though. The thing with weather is that it's sometime warm and sometimes cold. Right now the US is cold, that's the entire observation.

The poles have been ice free before. Do you think that it would be good for us humans if they became ice free again?
