So, I just got home holiday in Finland. While I was there I discovered something that was a bit odd. First and foremost, there were very many signs and the like with Swedish text on. I thought this was natural in some places because of the shared history of these countries. But when the menu at all the restaurants also had Swedish text, and the waiters spoke Swedish to me, I started to think that it was very weird. But this was not the only weird experience there. When I spoke to girls, they started to speak Swedish to me. Even though I spoke English, they continued to speak Swedish to me. It was also striking that almost 1 in 3 cars I saw was a Volvo. There is obviously nothing wrong with Volvo, but it really made me think. So I guess I just wanted to ask the finns here how come Finland is so obsessed with all Swedish?

What cities did you visit? I live in a backwards small town and I'm a friendless virgin freak, but when I was in school literally no one was able to learn Swedish.
It even beat math in how many people failed.

Swedish is used a lot in Swedish speaking areas and big cities because it is the second official language.
I think you went to some cities where there are a lot of swedes. Otherwise people wouldn't be able to speak Swedish.
And I suppose the reason why they would speak Swedish instead of English is that they wanted to put their Swedish lessons to use for once in their lives.

As for the Volvo thing, I really don't think that they're that common. Not 1 in 3. They are just one of the more common cars. And when we buy a car we don't think about "HMMM I SHOULD GET ME A SWEDISH CAR"

The reason why we tend to exclude them is because they don't speak a Nordic language
Denmark, Norway and Sweden are mutually inteligible, but we have minor troubles with faroese and icelandic
These are all north germanic languages. Finnish is not a north germanic language. It is not related to any other language in Europe except for hungarian and estonian.

It's Cool. Many Koreans are aware of Denmark. Danish beers, Eriksen of Tottenham, and a large bookstore in South Korea (and perhaps in Japanese bookstores too) have books on "Denmark, the world's number one happiest country". Oh and Flying tiger Copenhagen.

It is hard to believe it.. Usually TV news and newspapers in Japan are often covered on the main page of South Korean politics and society, and our TV news and newspapers often cover of Japan. We usually recognize the names of the presidents and prime ministers of each other though.
