Rome never went away, it only transformed throughout the ages with the changing currents. Modern European civilization (both Eastern and Western, and the offshoot cultures of both) is Rome today. It's changed a lot since those days, but the basis for our way of living and understanding the world was laid all the way back then and has continued uninterrupted ever since.
Rome is an idea, and it's just as alive now as it was a millenium or two ago.
