To clarify, in American political terminology, "socialism" is used to refer to everything from Social democracy to Stalinism. The recent trend of some politicans calling themselves "socialist" does not mean they are actually socialists. They are social democrats who are simply embracing years of conservative right-wing rhetoric that denounced all social programs as "socialist".
