It seems like for generations europeans were highly influenced by american media and were big fans of american culture. And big changes in Europe never happen until they happen in america (ideas of equality between the races, waves of feminism, ideas of democracy, etc...). And if they did happen in some parts of europe before the americas they wouldn't impact the rest of Europe until they happen in the US.

The history of the flag doesn't matter. When Sweden imported millions of old American cars in the 60's to the 90's a lot of them came from the southern states and many cars had that flag somewhere. The subculture just adopted it and now it's their symbol here. You can see 40-50 cars roll by a summer evening and all of them will have the confederate flag.
