Japanese is rather nationality than ethnicity and it includes yamato(mainlanders), ainu and Okinawans(ryukyuans). also Ryukyuan languages are said to be cognate with Japanese and the Kingdom belonged to sinosphere like we do so i don't really think we are VERY different
