Why is Turkey considered the leader of the Islamic world when Indonesia has most Muslims, Pakistan has the nukes, and Saudi Arabia has Mecca and Medina?

It’s probably because of Erdogan's determination for it to be so. In addition, Turkey is arguably the most stable and strongest Muslim nation. Saudi Arabia, while extremely wealthy, has a really poor military that can’t seriously contend with anything beyond its weak neighbors. Pakistan has nukes but they’re still suffering from instability and with nukes removed they don’t really have the means to project any power. Iran is probably the most serious contender, but they’re Shia, not Sunni.
