I haven't read anything about India in years but Iirc Gandhi unlike other Indian nationalist leaders didn't want full independence, he wanted India to be a republic but under the crown sort of like Canada is now. But then there was a shooting or massacre or something like that where the government fucked up and he started vying for full independence.

The reason India wasn't given Dominion status like Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa were was because in those countries the natives had by-and-large been replaced by white Christians, who the British government trusted to run their own country and stay loyal to the Empire. Obviously an Indian Dominion with a lot of autonomy would not have stayed loyal to Britain. They would have been gone even quicker than Ireland was.

Yeah, I was talking about this. They knew after full independent Pakistanis and Indians will be enemies. British Government was the only thing preventing this with oppression of Patriot.

I think we're talking about different time periods, by the first world war decolonization plans had already been started to be made iirc. It was India's choice to whether they wanted to stay as a Dominion or have complete independence and Gandhi was vouching for the former.
Also both Ireland and India could have been realistically incorporated but it would take Roman-era tier lack of human rights to do so and even in early modern period that shit didn't really fly anymore.

Tbh I don't know enough about Gandhi to say whether that's true or not but I'll take your word for it.
