Crimean Khanate was almost totally autonomous and de facto quasi-independant, they had their own money/coins, army, Istanbul had some influence and were allied to them but that's all, very limited suzerainty.

Yeah those were the most important factors I think, that's why most steppe dynasties were very short, I also think that they needed to stop the nomadic life style to stay in power for a long time and adopt a sedentary life. Gunpowder era changed things too and made empire last longer, because unlike bows and shit, you need a lot of structure to build cannon, firearms etc. not every tribe could do it.

All vassal states are independent. The Ottomans even vassalized Hungary (or Austria-Hungary I can't remember which ) for a time and the king had to pay tribute and bow before the Sultan but that doesn't mean they weren't (completely) independent. The Crimean's were more of a protectorate then a vassal state too so it was beneficial for them to be under the Ottoman wing.
