replaying this and the sequel recently I've found out that my nostalgia glasses were a little too tight. the game gets repetitive very quickly and reuses tracks far too often. the difficulty doesn't vary that much considering enemies basically scale alongside your upgrades if you get them asap. so when you unlock nitro, so does the CPU in the next mission. also the AI is dumb as hell in certain modes like Drag Race.
