They killed them (and their servants funnily enough) because once the communists got into power there was a bit of a civil war between them and pro-tsarists troops. Those troops came pretty close to the place where the tsar and his family were imprisoned so they killed them.

No. They did that because they were just very very brutal in general, even during the tsar's reign. The Soviets just continued that tradition and expanded on it.
There is actually another great anecdote from the time they took over the country. They had tons of political prisoners when they took over so Lenin wanted to know how many. He asked the guy that was responsible for that. He gave Lenin a small sheet of paper with the number on it (roughly 2000 people). Lenin put his sign under that to show that he read it.
The guy responsible then killed all these prisoners. Noone really knows why, maybe he misunderstood the sign and thought Lenin wanted them killed, maybe he just did it because he thought it Lenin would like it or maybe he was just a dick.
He got purged later though.
