My favourite example of America's appreciation for literature was when they were polled on what they thought were the greatest novels of the 20th Century. 7 out of the 10 novels they selected were written either by Ayn Rand (founder of Objectivism, world's most retarded philosophy) or L. Ron Hubbard (founder of Scientology, world's most retarded religion).
