YES we are very similar to hungarians and slovenians (especially in the south, since styria and carinthia were literally part of a proto-slovenian state), however, when I hear balkanoids I immediately think of serbo-croats. Also the reason why you think you would fit in here is probably because there are a lot of balkanoid immigrants in the urban centres of austria (which were most likely the locations you were visiting). Normally Austrians can stilly easily recognize whether or not someone is from Bosnia or Croatia since they are in fact different in looks and behaviour. Because there's nothing culturally or mentality-wise connecting Austrians to germans. The only ones that are somewhat similar to us are southern bavarians, but that's it. Ethnicity (group of people) is constituted by a sense of community and a group identity, which does exist among Austrians, but doesn't transcend austrias borders into germany. These two things CAN be the cause of multiple things, but don't HAVE to be caused by them.

As in they speak fucking German, they have based European architecture, modern and rich living.
