Learning Mandarin for purely economic reasons isn't very convincing to most people.

If you want people to learn Mandarin, you have to get them interested in it culturally and maybe politically.

People all over Europe learn German at school but then never really use it. It's the same thing

I have a textbook that has 800 characters in it and I make anki cards out of that.
To make sure I check everything in the Chinese-Hungarian dictionary I have.

This. People in my class studied German for over 8 years, yet in two years I was able to compete with them simply because I had an interest in the language.
German is a beautiful language. Can't wait until I have time to sit down an properly read the Nibelungenlied.
