hrm i actually think PPP is a better measurement because services as part of the economic output are captured whereas in nominal it only counts the value of physical goods. but apples and oranges. not to say PPP doesn't have issues too, it doesn't count the quality of the goods, it only measures raw materials accurately.

PPP is basically used to balance out the fact that a $10 haircut in Canada is like 10 rupee's in India. in nominal it would mean the same haircut in Canada is more than 52 times productive than a haircut in India, which is kind of dumb. nominal also fluctuates with exchange rates. both have there problems, neither give a full picture of economies, only in specific queries.

I think you guys have the right general idea. Nominal GDP is the sum total of the value of all the end consumer goods and services produced in a country. PPP is the same except adjusted for pricing trends in that country. So while nominal GDP more accurately measures wealth on an international scale, PPP can be safely ignored unless it is expressed per capita. Even then, PPP is a pretty poor indicator of QoL (look up Simon Kuznets). Youre much better off looking at HDI, especially inequality-adjusted, when trying to find out about how the average citizen is doing.
