From what I've read they knew they couldn't win any war against America that lasted for any time longer than 6 months which is why the plan was to attack pearl harbour and take out all the ships there then fortify all the other islands they had captured and make it too difficult for the Americans to fight from so far away that they simply give up and agree to a peace where japan keeps the stuff they got (What they were really hoping for was a repeat of when they beat imperial russia in a single large naval battle and the russians sued for peace shortly after). The Americans attacked back much faster than they had planned and they weren't able to fortify as much. The single large naval battle never happened either.
