They're perfect for those that don't leave their house and live off their parents. Here's the deal though, everybody knows everyone and news travels quickly. Someone would instantly find out if your wife cheated on you and would talk about it for months. In a way you'll have less privacy but it balances itself out because you have more space to conceal yourself compared to a large city. Another deal breaker could be lack of jobs if you're working in a specific field. Many people are either forced to move or do long commutes because there are no jobs near by. IMO medium size cities are the best of both worlds.
