In one of the largest genetic research projects of its type, published Jan of 2015 in the American Journal of Human Genetics, they found that British/Irish ancestry was found a mean proportions of at least 20% and represented a majority of ancestry in the United States.
Of the around 49 million Americans that claim predominantly Germanic ancestry only around 16 million actually are, making them significantly less frequent than blacks in America. This is further supported by historic census data that was unable to quantify the decrease in British ancestry and increase in German ancestry in the 20th century.
