You have to look at median (like here), not average. You have to look at wealth, not wage (people in Europe usually don't use their wage for 300k of education, 300k of health payments, etc)
I know that with Hollywood, the median american's wealth myth will never go.
But it's a fact, American society is ridiculously unfair, banana republic tier, with the 1% owning everything.

the median salary for my field is still tied highest in the US, only switzerland is equal with it. They have lower taxes but cost of living is higher there so i think i'll be alright

This has gotta be skewed. I'm a milennial or boomer in 4channel terms and I make well over twice the median income with no degree in a blue collar field I have 4 months experience in. My last company I worked for would literally higher anyone from desperation and was 14 an hour starting, I mean if you could pass a drug test and wanted a job they would hire you. The work was easy as fuck and if you demonstrated any ability it was trivial to advance but even if you were braindead that's almost 50% more than the figure in OP.
These figures get misrepresented by college grads that say "no im gonna be the one out of 1000s funneled out of the same degree to get my dream job that has no business entertaining this volume of graduates or I'm going to make $9 an hour in the service industry and bitch"
