Some unions are decent and actually do their job, but most of them inevitably become extortion schemes for a few union bosses. I did contracting work when I was 18, and plenty of "unions" were complete fucking scams set up by the company themselves, for example I was forced to join one that was for pavement workers, which is a seasonal job. When you get hired, you're put on a 6 month probationary period, during which you can be fired for any reason as if the union wasn't protecting you, but you still have to pay union dues (it was $15 per week in 2005). Well even after 6 months, guess what? It's a seasonal job, and you STILL get laid off because there is no work in the winter. That's 6 months of 60-75 dollars a month for nothing.

No maintenance work was permitted, and many more mines fell into disrepair, and had to be entirely disused.
Result was that 13 mines closed.
An appropriate strike response would take care of the value of the workplace while allowing for loss of profit due to decreased working efforts. Refusing to fill quotas for instance.
Total lockout is irresponsible and dangerous, and the strike leaders did not do it in the interests of the average worker.
