Was this always a thing? Why don't the men do it as well?

Yes, not only on east-asia either. South asians also do this

lighter skin is associated with femininity.
This is a cross-cultural phenomenon

i used once their whitening bb cream, elizavecca milky piggy and it looked dewy so i had to use finishing powder (men kind of have to use matte finish creams or use powder as well) and it also left traces on my phone and even with the powder it didn't last for the whole day and people asked me why i was so pale. fucking girls who reviewed that stuff had lied to me -_-

dark skin is associated with peasants who had to work in the field under the sun constantly. light skin pretty much shows you are a lady from upper class.

Yeah if a slav used it they would probably look like a fucking ghost.

Uhh seems a bit delusional to maintain this way of thinking after the 20th century.

yea, i'm starting to see some chinese girls do think about getting a tan from time to time these days.
