It varies a lot, even within states. If you look at things like life expectancy by county you see some pretty crazy things; parts of Appalachia have a life expectancy on par with India and much of Africa, while the wealthiest counties live just as long as Western Europeans.
In my state, Maryland, there's a few counties that are very, very wealthy overall. Income is high, jobs are stable, life expectancy is something like 83+, and crime is very low. Not too far away, Baltimore has serious issues with corruption, mismanagement, decaying buildings, poverty, and murder rates similar to those in some of the most dangerous cities in the world. Rural areas in the South and East are much safer but have issues with drug use, hunger, and poverty.
