We have nothing to do with Vietnam. Kinmen is a bunch of islands along with Matsu governed by the ROC as a part of their Fujian province, we fought against communist invasion from the mainland so we are physically closer to mainland China but ruled by a government located on Taiwan. But we have some not very positive feelings about the state of Taiwanese politics and some of the attitudes of Taiwanese people.

It isn’t. Mongols didn’t actually govern China, they just shipped people from across their empire do to all the scholarly work and so they never imposed their language. There are a few loanwords from Manchu like sachima but its’s an urban legend that erhua developed out of Manchu - it actually developed during the Ming back when the Manchus were still vassals to the Han. Erhua was probably a reaction to the loss of consonant endings in Mandarin.

Literally the first time I have ever heard this. Cantonese have superiority complexes because they were the prestige people of Yue and spoke the prestige dialect. They treated Taishanese and Hakka and Teochew like shit because of historical and economic reasons and their egos got further inflated when Europeans grabbed Macau and Hong Kong because now their dialects and people were richer and cosmopolitan.

Most of the actual languages that influenced Chinese like Xianbei or Chu Proto-Austronesian are extinct and they occurred through the Han assimilating them and turning their languages into substrates. Extinct Kra-Dai languages are the most obvious ones, it’s believed they actually led to tonogenesis in Mandarin because Mandarin was not a tonal language in its northern homeland before it began a southward spread.

it isn’t. mongolian has chinese loanwords but i wouldn’t say it’s heavily influenced by chinese while chinese has barley any from mongol. manchu has quite a lot of mongol and chinese influence but mongol and chinese don’t have much of manchu. this makes sense as manchus were not actually an ethnic group until the 1500s for the sole purpose of conquering china.

What’s interesting is that Mongolic, Turkic and Tungusic languages are unrelated but for a while some linguists put them in the controversial “Altaic family”. Now this is seen as rubbish and it is generally accepted that they only share similarities because of close contact. But there have also been some proposals that they were all influenced by a now extinct Yeniseian people who conquered all their ancestors or ruled as the elites in a multi-ethnic confederacy.

Other way around. All the Southern Chines languages have substrates of extinct languages that the Chinese conquered or they retained different aspects of Chinese. The Proto-Sinitic people originated around Inner Mongolia/Hebei/Shanxi/Henan and made gradual migrations to the south. I don’t know how you can think Mandarin sounds weird when the Min languages exist.
