Ottomans actually kept the name Constantinople
Only when the Ottoman Empire fell and was replaced by modern Turkey after WW1 they renamed it Istanbul
I wonder why
Brazil was once a Native American shithole
It also was orthodox majority till the end of 19 century.
*To distance modern Turkish republic from imperial past, I meant to write
>Between 1919 and 1922, as you know Turkey was invaded and its land was shared between allied powers.
The breaking point of Konstantiniyye name was the entry of King Constantine I (of Greece) to Izmir in 1921.When he was passing through Greek citizens, they were shouting his name, cheer and (implying that) the city Istanbul was actually gonna be Constantinopolis again, just like the king's name who was entering.
>Turks are then detest the name "Konstantiniyye"
Wow thank you for sharing this honestly. I always wondered why they didn't just keep the name kostantiniyye but now I sort of get it desu
On 8 October 1912, during the First Balkan War, Lemnos became part of Greece. The Greek navy under Rear Admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis took it over without any casualties from the occupying Turkish Ottoman garrison, who were returned to Anatolia. Peter Charanis, born on the island in 1908 and later a professor of Byzantine history at Rutgers University recounts when the island was occupied and Greek soldiers were sent to the villages and stationed themselves in the public squares. Some of the children ran to see what Greek soldiers looked like. ‘‘What are you looking at?’’ one of them asked. ‘‘At Hellenes,’’ the children replied. ‘‘Are you not Hellenes yourselves?’’ a soldier retorted. ‘‘No, we are Romans."[18]

You do know that Byzantium second language was Latin. And A LOT of Romans lived in and studied in Byzantium. There was no distinctive line between Greeks and Romans back then, since we were one and the same.
Orthodox christians in the Ottoman Empire refered to themselves as Romans or Rhomaioi (Ῥωμαῖοι; sg. Ῥωμαῖος Rhomaios).
The term Hellene was usually used when talking about pagan Greeks of antiquity.
Why did Constantinople get the works?
Growing up is understanding that the Turkish BVLL has been too lenient with the balk*noids.
