I don't think they have formally given up their claim. ironically, the ROC (Taiwan) giving up their claim to the mainland would be seen as by the PRC (China) a move towards irrevocable independence. The PRC would retaliate toward the ROC, at least economically, but maybe also militarily. Meanwhile, PRC wumao disingenuously cry about the ROC claiming the mainland, as if Taiwan is some kind of militarily ambitious, expansionist power, that is trying to retake all of China.
