Many men on my paternal side were engaged in left-wing politics during the II Republic, except for my paternal grandfather, who remained 'neutral' and avoided fighting in the Civil War. The whole Republican involvement of his brothers, uncles and dad remained a taboo topic for my father and his siblings and I only got to know it through my mum and some online history records belonging to town halls and trade unions I found on the Internet.

Grandfather was a member of our version of the NSDAP, greatly collaborated with the Germans during WWII and went to jail.
He had a normal life after the war though so no biggie :).
