I want to live in Hungary

I want to live in Hungary.

What is life like there for a foreigner and in general?

>What is life like there for a foreigner and in general?
Depends what you want from life, really. And how much money you have. Why do you want to live in Hungary?

You Murikans barely speak English, how on earth are you going to learn a Uralic language? Hupikék törpikék

Also this, nothing against this guy specifically, but I've never met a non-native speaker who has learned to speak Hungarian decently. And many people in Hungary are monolingual/don't speak English...

>Depends what you want from life, really
I don't really know, come to think of it. What kind of life does Hungary offer?
>And how much money you have.
I make a little over 100k USD at the moment and will probably top out at ~150-250k depending on how much effort I put into my career.
>Why do you want to live in Hungary?
I recently visited and love everything about it, the food, the language, the laid-backness, the cost of living, etc. It felt so perfect that there has to be something lurking under the surface, I'm sure (e.g. the political situation)
Deeply unkind

Is there anything that makes it a particularly difficult language aside from the fact that it's PIE? If tens of thousands of half-sentient weebs can learn decent japanese then I'm sure that Magyar is doable unless it's got some crazy shit going on

>I recently visited and love everything about it, the food, the language, the laid-backness, the cost of living, etc.
Then go for it desu. The country is pretty stable and safe, but obviously the standards of living are lower than in the West. Like our healthcare is shit, our infrastructure is not great, the education system is getting worse, people can be very depressing/sulky in their daily life (no offense, but it's also likely that many people would distance themselves because you'd be an outsider), and the country doesn't look that great outside of the center of few major cities...

If you decide to move, I'd recommend some city with a lot of international students (even if you're not a student yourself), such as Pécs, since people there tend to be more welcoming towards strangers.

Just make sure to learn the language up front. I see too many American expats who think they can get around by just using English, but you will isolate yourself from the rest of society. And I also encourage you to make friends as soon as possible.

If you have money, you're all set. You'll never speak the language though, I've never met an anglo who actually understood our pronunciation and grammar. Avoid the capital though, it's beyond disgusting.

Honestly, the glaring institutional problems kind of make it feel less foreign as an American.
Good advice. Not gonna lie, it's really tempting to just speak to everyone in English when traveling.
What makes Hungarian harder to learn than any other non-PIE language?
>Avoid the capital though, it's beyond disgusting
What's wrong with it?

I don't think you know what PIE means

>Why yes, I am fluent in PIE language. How did you know?

Hungarian? Shove him down the stairs.

Budapest to the rest of Hungary is like California to the rest of the US, it's where all the hipsters, minorities and urbanites live, along with most of the population, and a huge portion of the economy. It's not bad by western or north american standards though, it just sticks out a lot more on a local level

Also, I'd recommend Győr, Pécs and Eger as nice places to live as well. That said, unless you really like hungarian culture and language, you might be better off somewhere like Austria or the czech republic. Give it a year to get used to it and see if you like it, don't throw down roots immediately. Socialize and meet as many people as you can though, that's important for starting somewhere new, otherwise you feel like even more of an outlier.

Fine, indo-european language please stop bullying me
What's wrong with magyars?

They exist and ally themselves with krauts

to give you an actual answer, the reason hungarian is rather difficult is because there is very little shared grammar or words with other langauges, and the grammatical case system is pretty intimidating. Most hungarians don't even know the rules, they just get used to it at an early age and can do it intuitively. It's also a very prose-y language.

In addition, while there isn't a rigorous sentence order, e.g.
>megette jani a tortát -> Ate Johnny the cake -> Johnny ate the cake
>a tortát megette jani -> The cake johnny ate -> same meaning
the order determines meaning, and there is a righter-sounding way to convey emphasis depending on context. Also, the conjugation is simple, but grammatical cases can be difficult for english speakers to understand, check out

it's just practice though, and Hungarians, as bitter and banty as they like to be, are genuinely interested when people try to learn the language. Here's a young guy that became fluent rather quick

so it's definitely doable. Keep in mind a lot of hungarians don't know english as much as other euro countries, but zoomers have absorbed a bit more through global media, and you might have better luck with them.

What ethnicity are you?

I'd also like to point out that I found this when looking for the other video

What's country like outside of the 'international' cities?
>That said, unless you really like hungarian culture and language, you might be better off somewhere like Austria or the czech republic.
I'm exclusively interested in Hungary, Austria and Czechia seem kind of boring desu
Thanks for the info. The word order aspect (and inflection from what I've read) seems like the hardest thing to nail down by far.
>Here's a young guy that became fluent rather quick
Damn that's impressive.
Half slavic mutt, half western yuromutt.

>Half slavic mutt, half western yuromutt
Sorry, we don't need more wh*tes.

Hungary is great, but the language is a pain

So right now here's my master plan:
>learn magyar
>claim muh heritage citizenship by virtue of having far-flung magyar ancestry
>move to Budapest and work remotely for english-speaking company
>leave to english-speaking EU country if/when shit hits the fan due to political situation
OR
>get remote job at company based in ireland or the UK
>somehow get visa to live in Hungary
>get by on shitty magyar in Budapest
>leave for english-speaking EU cunt if/when things get FUBAR
thoughts?
devastating
I unironically love the language

>when shit hits the fan due to political situation
What political situation? Bruh, the country is stable. It's more likely that there will be some major political conflict in the USA than here.

Populism is cancerous and always carries a risk of going south.

if you want to experience the countryside, keep in mind approximately 0% of people speak english. Also, watch 'A Mi Kis Falunk' which is basically the Trailer Park Boys but in a hungarian village.

youtu.be/nD6C4-m6xXM

The eastern half of the country is also basically the equivalent of the american south, so you might enjoy that

That's true, but it's unlikely.

Sweet, thanks for the tips. Hopefully by the next time I'm in the country (end of this year inshallah) I'll have learned at least a small amount of the language.
A full-on authoritarian dictatorship is unlikely, but populism can erode a place to the point where it becomes unpleasant to live in, without completely causing the place to fall apart.

>but populism can erode a place to the point where it becomes unpleasant to live in,
That's true, I guess. Hopefully things will get better once boomers die out.

honestly, if you made a decent effort to learn words and practice, you could probably speak understandably in a few months, although fluency would definitely be longer. Hungarian girls find broken hunglish cute for whatever reason though, so you might have good luck.

my grandparents are pressuring me to fly back and vote fidesz, boomers really are something else

Shithole country

I live in the North-East. You can very well get by with a laid-back ranch-style living with animals. Just in my tiny village we have 3 Dutch families doing the same. So you won't be that much of an outsider either.

Also expect balkan-tier corruption regarding politics.

A few months for working magyar doesn't sound too bad. Do you know anything about the quality of language classes?
That sounds comfy as fuck.

I went to Hungarian school on weekends for most of my childhood, it was a bit of a meme but I guess it was sort of useful

as for adult classes, I'd say the best case is learning enough from courses to hold a conversation, and then just talking to people and consuming the media to learn more, it will get you further than actual courses after a certain point IMO. I have no idea about the quality of courses, but I'm sure there are a few good ones out there

How retarded would my magyar become if I were to keep it up by posting on the Hungarian general thread?

you'd learn zoomer hungarian pretty quick, there's internet speak in hungarian too. Also, /ka/ is usually pretty cancerous, but occasionally entertaining

shitskins arent welcome
otherwise I think its fine just learn the language

>hurr durr muh shitskins
This is why you should stay out of this shithole, people here are fucking backwards cancer and I hope they all die.

get fucked traitor

Be realistic. Have you ever met a foreigner who was really good at Hungarian? Your language is very fucking difficult.

I actually did
One of my english teacher was polish and she spoke really good hungarian

Kys retard. This fucking joke of a nation should just do the world a favour and mass suicide.

>I want to live among the 13/50's
just move to africa if you hate whites this much

Are there lots of french people there ? Almost every racist frog i know either knows someone who emigrated there, works there, or is planning to.

Oh there he goes, he's talking about muh whiteness now.

it's not difficult. the words are just foreign. pronounciation and grammar are easy.

>muh things I dont like
are you unironically retarded?

>cries about "shitskins"
>accuses others of being retarded
Kek. I'm done talking to you. Death to H*ngarians.

Those are some strong arguments.

>expects me to respond to his non-arguments with arguments
Kek, the absolute state of H*ngarians.

>zoomer
Okay you've convinced me never to look at that thread again
Whiter than you, Ferenc :-)

>non argument
What the hell are you talking about?
I told op that if he is a shitskin he shouldn't come here because hungarians don't like them then you sperged out.

As a native english speaker, the ö is the only thing that I'm struggling with as far as pronunciation goes.

just remember that hungarian taps the 'r', not a roll or an american 'r'

I've got that down; I can't roll my r's so I've been tapping for all my years in choir

Budapest isn't Hungary. The good parts of Hungary are being occupied Romanians. If only I could trade Transdunabia for Transylvania.

>occupied
Oh no no no,

>Dunántúli alember

>Transylvania
At least you gave Romania the only good piece of land it has
