Idiot. This is the Cathedral's response to the right-wing wave sweeping elections across the world. They tried to pretend Trump's victory was a Russian plot, but there are too many populist candidates winning in too many countries to keep up that narrative, so they've advanced to the stage of actively censoring the opposition.
Guns have fuck all to do with it, they're merely a symbol of something the Cathedral can't control, which the Cathedral hates, and so it wants to restrict them out of principle. The goal isn't to regulate guns, the goal is to micromanage every aspect of civilians' lives and strip them of even the slightest hope that they might have sovereign control over their own actions and lives.
