I don't know about people who grew up there or whose family is actually from there, but from my own experience as a foreigner and from talking to Japanese from elsewhere who went there for study or work, it sort of feels like living in a bubble. Everyone who you don't know, who isn't somehow involved with your daily life, might as well be part of the scenery. So it feels like an emptier, lonelier, smaller place than it is and than many smaller cities do.
