>The cheapest sort of pride is national pride; for if a man is proud of his own nation, it argues that he has no qualities of his own of which he can be proud; otherwise he would not have recourse to those which he shares with so many millions of his fellowmen. The man who is endowed with important personal qualities will be only too ready to see clearly in what respects his own nation falls short, since their failings will be constantly before his eyes. But every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud adopts, as a last resource, pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and glad to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.
The cheapest sort of pride is national pride; for if a man is proud of his own nation...

>Implying the role of the subject is to commit himself to a sense of duty toward society and nation in the essence of a high cultural value that is bigger than ourselves.
yeah I shouldn't care about the entity that my family for generations was a part of, of which they supported with hard work, I just happen to have no personal qualities of my own despite me being able to work on them as a result of the well-being of my nation
thanks shitterhauer
Man, you just destroyed Schopenhauer!
The quote is meh, but national pride is peak cringe baka
I would understand with a country as shit as yours.
He is right
>Subject
cringe
none of this conflicts with being a nationalist or patriot
>I individually have no effect on the nation and therefore cannot be proud of its achievements with my effort
is this sarcastic i cant tell
i think my post was a decent argument against the quote in the OP
Schopenhauer then goes on to make fun of English pride and say that 49 out of every 50 English people are complete idiots
Thats the defining term, civilian is a stupid term that republicans use.
This is one of my favourites
Arthur Schopenhauer — 'Reading is merely a surrogate for thinking for yourself; it means letting someone else direct your thoughts
When the form of the pride is wrong, the analysis of content is sort of pointless.
But I'll take it. What do you have to be proud of, when "your" country's history is little but bloodshed and cruelty?
That’s because the quote has been taken out of context, but he addresses your dumb argument in his book
what's he say then
this "out of context" quote is posted everywhere
If he is address blind patriotism then I agree
>yeah I shouldn't care about the entity that my family for generations was a part of, of which they supported with hard work, I just happen to have no personal qualities of my own despite me being able to work on them as a result of the well-being of my nation
LIKE CLOCKWORK
Hear hear!
>bloodshed and cruelty
I don't know, perhaps the industrial revolution, the great wealth and fame the empire brought this country, the fact we abolished slavery and ensured no other European power conducted it, our great military might, the longest surviving royal family in the world, our involvement in the two world wars, the invention of the railway, the steam engine, the bloody light bulb, the telegraph, carbon fibre, the telephone, the television, the tank, the toothbrush, the jet engine, the radio, the safety bicycle, the electric motor, the sewage system, high pressure underground tunneling. That kind of thing.
muttposting isn't funny if there's no applicable context retard
This is the wettest thing I have read
>muttposting isn't funny if there's no applicable context retard
Now I am become Orlistat, the destroyer of fries.
shut yo mutt ass up ye fat bitch
Tell me user, what do you contribute to your nation?
You ain't getting a participation medal for not doing anything
I am unique and all things are nothing to me, however I have a deep appreciation for art and aesthetics and I believe that a great country is a beautiful country full of beautiful people, therefore negros and pollution are still not welcome but that doesn't mean that all things aren't my property, that means that they are my property, therefore, I want my things, my surroundings as aesthetically pleasing as possible.
The industrial revolution, conducted in such a way that it pushed an enormous number of former farmers into extreme poverty? The mighty press-ganged navy, and the butchering glorious Empire? The inventions which were conceived in individual minds, not by any "nation"?
Come, now. Not even on the level of content can you justify pride in your so-called glorious history. And neither can anyone in his, if he turns a bit away from nationalist mythos, construing war as a glorious event which shows power.
And the actual falsity doesn't even come from the content, but from the form.
I couldn't care less about the economic side of history, leave that to current modern politics. A nation is not an economic zone. Whigs would sell their own mother if it meant a 'higher GDP growth rate.
For once, the American is right. Fuck this anti-nationalism bullshit, people who don't value the collectivity that raised and nourished them all their lives should be spit on, bunch of egoistic assholes.
>b-but muh individual freedom
me, me, me. Pieces of shite
youre right, nobody contributes anything, the nation doesnt actually exist
> egoistic assholes
As if it were a bad thing.
It was a serious question
I wasn't raised by the "nation". Be honest about that, please. And I fail to see how caring for people on grounds other than nationality makes me particularly egoistic.
Egoism is for children. Grown men see the bigger picture.
What "big picture"? Everyone is a fucking egoist. Wake the fuck up. You don't do "good" because you're "good". You do "good" because you want to feel good/important. That relates to Nietzsche's Will to Power argument.

I contribute to the GDP and I pay my taxes.
...So you can have a return. So you can have "free" shit that will benefit you, yourself, your ego.
EXTREME COPE

I agree, somewhat. I agree when you say you can care about others on grounds other than nationality. But nationality is also a very important part of us, you being a Croat defines much of your existance, and sharing that with millions of other people is a very strong bond which shouldn't be neglected. To cherish nationalism is to cherish the similarities between you and all other nationals, rooted in the common history you all share. And that's beautiful, but then there's some GAY ASS LIBERALS, afraid of mistakes of nationalist regimes past, that just shit the whole thing. Fuck them.
>citing Nietzsche
what are you, 17? Go read the Bible, motherfucker. Then maybe you wouldn't be the lonely loser that you are and would do some actual good for a change, instead of complaining "good doesn't exist, boo-hoo". Typical words of a useless piece of shite who sits at home all day making shitty excuses for his own lack of character. Pitiful.
>I contribute to the GDP
How so?
>I pay my taxes.
Pretty negligible in the grand scheme of things, wouldn't you agree?
im a draft and design engineer for parts
So what?

I already read that crap, more than once actually. I've also read Kierkegaard. Unlike you, I enjoy challenging my worldview. Enjoy being a brainlet. Keep ignoring what you don't want to know because it brings discomfort to you.
If nationalism was just "feeling pride" then it would be fucking worthless
Fortunately, there's more than individual feelings in nationalism, things like
>political unity with the whole population
>demanding leaders treat their subjects as part of their own collective
>economics that don't just benefit international elites and their hangarounds
You can subjectively feel as much or little pride as you want -- true nationalism has objective consequences.
>your post
Now seriously, about your whole argument: been there done that. I too had my edgy contrarian atheist nietzschean phase, which usually matches late adolescence-early adulthood in a man's life. If you ever go see how real human life works (outside 4channel, for instance) you'll see that it is based on various degrees of cooperation. I won't argue for such an obvious fact. If you want to keep living in your egoistic bubble, being a burden to those around you and contributing nothing in return, suit yourself. I'm just saying that this attitude is directly related to the fact that you are an unhappy person. Just saying out of experience, that's all. You believe what you want, anonymous internet poster.
>ad-hominem
>ad-hominem
>ad-hominem
>more ad-hominem
This is your brain on Christianity.
>fled his country to avoid potential wartime defense military service
At least it's consistent with his positions, though I would count that action as unethical.
>supports the French revolution even though he states he would prefer Monarchy over peer governance if it meant smaller government
This is almost the polar opposite of what the French revolution was positing, making it an inconsistent standing on events in regards to his ethical positions.
Absolutely based.
is he wrong?
das rite
>trying to deny the fact that you are unhappy, and that you give cause to your unhappiness because of your childish, stubborn points of view
I state the fact that you are unhappy, not as mere ad-hominem, but because it is the most obvious sign that you should rethink your take on life. And I simply happen to know that about you, just out of the things you said in this thread.

There's nothing wrong with having appreciation for the efforts of the people that came before. The problem starts when you start taking personal offense at slights made against an abstract concept like a nation that you yourself had absolutely no role in forming or developing. You were only born here, don't act like you personally fought in the wars or did the scientific research that led to some major advancement. At that point you're just taking credit for someone else's work.

Vossa excelência mui augusto e sereno dom senhor anônimo postador da internet, eu já te convenci, só você não percebeu.
