its not yellow its gold. it usually gets depicted wrong. its black red and gold because they resemble the banner/heraldry of the holy roman empire. the HRE resembled a unified germany in the minds of the Revolutionaries of 1848 so they chose those colours. after the fall of the ger empire the flag was reused to symbolize a unified germany as a democracy in the spirit of 1848.
every other Interpretation ( from the black of serfdom through the red of blood to the golden light of freedom) is larping and made up after the flag was already chosen.(but it sounds cool)
